We spent the evening sat around the campfire. It was relaxing. So relaxing I don’t even remember what we did, as I ended up eating a load of hash cake (without realising) that one of the hippies had made. I could have eaten it off her belly for all I remember.

The next morning, after a good night’s sleep in my tent, I went off with Melissa and planted a baby wild peach tree on her land, so even if my work isn’t useful after I’m gone, the tree will be around for hundreds of years. Before we left, Melissa gave me some wild peach spray, which is made from the flowers from her forest and can be bought through her website for 120 rand. As I’ve been saying all along, having a vocation is important, but you need to make money to survive.

Since being back home Melissa has emailed me:

I think that your ‘crisps’ message from the tree had a deeper meaning to it. When we planted your wild peach tree I told you that in the past, extensive parts of the forest there had been felled to farm . . . potatoes! And, of course, crisps (or chips as we call them in South Africa) are made from potatoes! Aha! So that was not such a random message after all.
